Ryan's bio

The author of Behind The Lights is Globe sports writer Ryan Atkinson.
Ryan is the Globe’s beat writer for Joplin High School and Pittsburg State football this fall.
Ryan grew up in the sparsely-populated lands of northern Cherokee County and went to high school in Columbus, Kan. He played — but did not necessarily dominate in — football, basketball and baseball for the Fightin’ Titans.
Before coming to the Globe in 2007, Ryan worked for five-plus years at The Morning Sun in Pittsburg. During that stretch, he also worked at The Collegio, the student newspaper of Pittsburg State, where he semi-miraculously earned enough credits to graduate.
Ryan lives in Pittsburg with his wife, Jaye Bea, and their two dogs; Daisy, a Jack Russell Terrier, and Myler, whose lineage is entirely unknown.
