Daisy Dean George

Daisy Dean George, age 94, of Webb City, Mo., passed away at 5:05 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at Webb City Health and Rehab Center, following a lengthy illness.

Daisy was born May 9, 1913, in Webb City, and was a lifetime Webb City resident. She was a member of the Webb City American Legion Post 322 Auxiliary, and the Earl J. Bruton V.F.W. Post 534 Auxiliary in Joplin.

Dairy married Fred George Sept. 21, 1929, in Webb City. He preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1984.

Survivors include two sons, Louis M. “Corky” George, Webb City and Freddie L. George, Carl Junction, Mo.; one daughter, Kay Robison, Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Daisy has been cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home in Webb City with Roger Hasselquist, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorial contributions are requested to Trinity Hospice in care of the funeral home. Interment of cremains will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.

Curtis G. “Butch” Williams Jr.

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Curtis G. “Butch” Williams Jr., age 54, passed away at his home on Oct. 29, 2007, at 9:15 p.m. after battling lung cancer.

Butch was born on June 19, 1953, in Webb City to Curtis G. Williams Sr. and Nola (Jarnagin) Williams.

He was preceded in death by his father; grandmother, Alma Kelly; and grandparents, Claude and Tamzie Jarnagin.

Surviving relatives include parents, Ed and Nola Link (Williams), of Neosho, Mo.; sisters, Betty Luckie and husband, John, of Springfield, Mo., Barbara McMurry and husband, Bill, of Pittsburg, Kan., Glenda Love and husband, Fred, of O’Fallon, Mo., Becky Jenkins and husband, David, of Weir, Kan., and Debbie Thompson and husband, Mark, of Weir; wife, Vicki Williams, of Webb City; daughter, Brittany Williams and husband, Mark Miller, of Whiteman Air Force Base; son, Curtis G. Williams III and wife, Julie, of Harrison, Ark.; grandchildren, Julie Ware, Kristin Miller, Lyrik Williams, Allie Williams, Curtis Williams IV, Emma Williams and Jace Miller; and one great-granddaughter, Anya Ware.

Butch grew up and went to school in Webb City. He married his best friend, Vicki Hardaway, on Feb. 10, 1973. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1975 and was stationed in Charleston, S.C. He was released from active duty in 1977 and returned to Webb City. He and his family moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1983, to start a construction company. He moved back again to Webb City in 1984 and continued his work in construction as a drywall finisher.

His compassion for those in need is only matched by the love that he had for his family. He came to know Christ by his nephew, Aaron Williams, with whom he developed a very strong and spiritual attachment. He loved serving the Lord and he faithfully attended Weir United Methodist Church, where he developed many close friendships. Butch was incredibly selfless and believed that other than his family, his only needs in life were “what he could carry in a grocery bag.” He encouraged his friends and family with his famous line, “It’ll be alright,” even saying so in his last moments surrounded by his family.

He was a wonderful son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was greatly loved by his family and friends and will be missed more than words can express.

Funeral services for Butch Williams will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Open Air Chapel at Mount Hope Cemetery with Aaron Williams officiating. Pallbearers will be David Jenkins, Greg Jones, Eddie Craddock, Rusty Thompson, Brian Craddock and Randy Burgeron. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Thompson, Bob Marrett, Jerry Corum, Clayton Temaat and Charles Marrett. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 Friday at Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City.

Services are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home, of Webb City.

Denny Joe Oxendine

JOPLIN, Mo. — Denny Joe Oxendine, age 64, of Joplin, passed away at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Denny was born Sept. 11, 1943, in Granby, Mo., and resided in Joplin most of his life. He retired in 1999 from the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. in Joplin following 28 years of service. He was a 1961 graduate of Joplin High School. Denny was a longtime local musician, that had the “Denny and the Cruisers” band since 1987. He started his first band at age 14. Denny was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church, near Carthage, Mo. He was also a member of the Joplin Elk’s Lodge No. 501 and the 4-State Vettes Club. From 1975 to 1985, he was the coach for the Killer Bee’s ladies softball team.

Denny was married to Shirley Jones Oct. 16, 1988, in Joplin and she survives.

Additional survivors include one son, Brett J. Oxendine, Joplin; two daughters, Tracey L. Oxendine, Springfield, Mo., and Cathe Chapman and husband, Rob, Joplin; his father, L.V. Oxendine, Joplin; his twin sisters, Kathy Bemiss and husband, Mike, and Karen White and husband, Rick, all of Joplin; and one grandson, Franklin Tucker. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Oxendine; and an infant brother, Jerry Oxendine.

Denny has been cremated. An Elk’s service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Elk’s Lodge No. 501 in Joplin with a celebration of Denny’s life to follow until 3 p.m. All of his friends are invited to attend.

Memorial contributions are requested to the American Diabetes Association or the Joplin Elk’s Lodge No. 501 in care of the mortuary.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary, of Joplin.

Jewell Silvers Poindexter

Jewell Silvers Poindexter, 99, of Cottonwood, Ariz., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007. She was born July 16, 1908, in Melbourne, Ariz., to Thomas and Lee Wiley.

Jewell was a beautiful and caring person and the love she had for family and friends could never be doubted.

She was married to Vic Poindexter for over 50 years and together they made their home in Carthage, Mo. Their home on James Street was filled with too many fond memories to count. She made her home a special place for her children and grandchildren alike, often extending her hospitality past the bonds of family to those in need of a warm meal or kind word. Jewell was a talented woman, a skilled seamstress and her crochet work was second to none.

Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Vic Poindexter; son, Calvin Jennings; and son-in-law, Floyd Fulks.

She leaves behind her sons, Douglas Poindexter and his wife, Helen, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Wayne Poindexter with his wife, Gayle, of Mayer, Ariz., and Jess Poindexter with his wife, Cheryl, of La Russell, Mo.; her daughter, Jeanne Fulks, of Camp Verde, Ariz.; as well as 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and five great-great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev. Ron Franklin, First Baptist Church, Carthage, will officiate. After the graveside service, the Poindexter family and friends will meet at the Sirloin Stockade, 1027 W. Central, Carthage.

Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Roy William “Bill” Sherwood

Roy William “Bill” Sherwood, 73, rural Wyandotte, Okla., passed into eternal rest at 2 a.m. Oct. 30, 2007, at his son’s home in Joplin after a battle with cancer.

Bill was born Dec. 25, 1933, in Ottawa County, Okla., the son of James William and Rosa Ella “Elam” Sherwood on the farm in which he lived on of most his life. He had retired from King Press, where he was a machinist. Bill also drove a truck and had owned and operated the former Seneca Tire. Bill was a 1952 graduate of Wyandotte High School.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Sherwood, in 2004; and his son, James William Sherwood, in 2007.

Survivors include three sons, John Sherwood and Ron Sherwood, both of Joplin, and Don Sherwood, Wyandotte; one daughter, Tammye Harding, Riverton, Kan.; one brother, Bob Sherwood, Miami, Okla.; two sisters, Doris Cantwell, Wyandotte, and Dorothy Hinshaw, Miami; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services, under the personal care of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca, Mo., will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at East Side Assembly of God with Rev. Gary Rhoads officiating. Burial will be in the Modoc Indian Cemetery with Shawn Sherwood, Adam Sherwood, David Sherwood, Clinton Sherwood, John W. Sherwood and Lee Bivins serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Shirley Ann (Turner) Fast

Shirley Ann (Turner) Fast, 79, Lamar, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at 2:15 a.m. at Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar.

Shirley was born May 20, 1928, in North Bend, Wash., to Roy Stevenson and Alma Virginia (Garrett) Turner. At the age of 3, her family moved to Barton County, Mo. She was a graduate of Liberal High School. She was Baptized at an early age into the Methodist faith. She was a homemaker and had also worked for many years for O’Sullivan in housekeeping. She was a member of the Bryan Club and the Mount Hope Chapter 74 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was presented her 50 year pin.

Shirley married Dale B. Fast on Dec. 21, 1946, in Girard, Kan. He died on March 31, 1996.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jo Davis, of St. Clair, Mo.; three sons, Jimmy and Judy Fast and Gary and Jill Fast, of Lamar, and Lester and Christine Fast, of Liberal, Mo.; one sister, Katherine Farmer, of Liberal; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Steven Fast; one brother, Allen Turner; and an infant sister, Ruby.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Konantz-Warden Funeral Home Chapel, Lamar, with Randy Sprenkle officiating. Burial will be in Barton City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at the funeral home.
