Spelling Bee

Sweaty palms, dry mouths and difficult words are the order of the day when The Joplin Globe presents the annual spelling bee. The event is held at Taylor Auditorium on the Missouri Southern State University campus in Joplin.

The work begins in January when schools in the Globe’s circulation area register and receive a study list of approximately 2,500 words. Schools hold individual bees, narrowing it down to one winner from fourth, fifth or sixth-grade to compete in the Globe’s Tournament of Champions.

Dr. David Ackiss, professor of English at MSSU, is spell master for this highly anticipated event, which normally attracts some 100 area competitors. Each student who participates receives a small trophy and certificate. Large trophies and cash prizes are awarded to students who place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

While spelling is certainly the focus, the bee teaches important lessons in courage and confidence, too!
