Take
an average Thursday in the fall, toss in a tasty lunch,
then pair experienced journalists with students eager
to explore the newspaper business. That’s the
recipe for The Joplin Globe’s annual Journalism
Workshop, and your high school students are invited!
Schools in The Globe’s circulation area may
register to send four students to spend the day shadowing
and visiting with professionals at The Joplin Globe.
Throughout the day, the young journalists attend sessions
of their choice in news writing, feature writing,
editorial writing, sports writing, photography, page
design, advertising, graphic arts and the
Internet. The goal of the workshop is to
provide students with an inside look at the operation
of a daily newspaper as well as an appreciation of
and respect for the First Amendment.
Schools participating in the workshop are also invited
to send copies of their school newspapers to be judged
by Globe staff. At the conclusion of the workshop,
prizes are awarded in categories including: Best
Feature Story,
Best News Story, Best Editorial/Column, Best Photo,
and Best Sports Story.
The free workshop begins at approximately 8:30 a.m.
and concludes at 2 p.m. Registration is mailed to
schools in late September or early October. Early
registration is necessary as space is limited.
