Description: Wilson’s Creek, the most significant 1861 battle in Missouri, gave the Confederates control of southwestern Missouri. Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon became the first union general killed in battle, but two dozen other veterans of the fighting at Wilson’s Creek would achieve the rank of general before the war ended.
