Having grown up in Joplin, I can say one thing with certainty: Joplin never ceases to amaze me. It’s a town of contrasts. It’s a town with a rich history. It’s a town with larger-than-life characters, movers and shakers, and ordinary people who are just trying to make a living.
Fortunately for me, I’ve had the pleasure of writing about my hometown for more than 30 years here at The Joplin Globe. I know Joplin’s story pretty well. If I don’t know something about it, I know the people who do.
Most of my newspaper work has involved the news, but in 2000 I started writing a weekly column called “Watching Range Line,’’ which chronicles events and activities along Joplin’s primary commercial strip. In the world of journalism, it’s a hybrid that combines the news with opinion and a dash of gossip.
But there are other commercial streets in town and this blog will chronicle what’s happening in the rest of Joplin. In other words, I’m hoping to deliver the rest of the story.
Send me an e-mail if something is going on in your neighborhood that you want to know more about because I’m Wally Kennedy, and the street is my beat.
