The Loss of a Great Man

We lost one of our area’s sports icons recently when Charlie Williams passed away. We all know about his accomplishments as a coach, more than 700 career wins, coaching the men and women at Ozark Christian College, and shaping the lives of so many he came in contact with both on the college and high school level. I knew Coach Williams for several years and he truly was one of the nicest men that I have eve met. In recent years, I would talk to him a lot at Missouri Southern basketball games. He always had a kind word and I felt honored to have known him. Like so many of us, I will really miss Coach Williams. Going to Southern games to watch the Lions will never be the same without Charlie sitting right in front.

Missouri Southern can’t give permission to their players to transfer to other schools within the conference without sitting out a year, which is a rule. If that stuff starts happening, teams can start combing through rosters and trying to persuade guys to join their teams. I agree with Southern on this one, whoever wants to leave can leave, just go to a school outside of the MIAA. One of the players in this situation is one of the best linebackers in the country, what coach would be okay with him going to another conference school to play against them? I am all for them going to grad school somewhere else and furthering their education, but not this way.

My Take on Tiger Should be Yours Too

Everyone that I talk to seems to have their own opinion on Tiger Woods these days. Some say it’s none of our business, which I don’t agree with, and others like me think we have a right to know why he was found sleeping in his car at 2:30 in the morning after hitting a fire hydrant and tree with his car. Let’s me clear, if this happened to Joe and Mary Beer Can down the street, then yes, I don’t care and it’s nobody’s business. However, Joe Beer Can doesn’t make 100 million dollars annually, and close to 1 billion dollars so far in his career in endorsements every year. Tiger can be seen on my television and yours everyday trying to sell us cars, shoes, razors, video games, sports drinks, golf balls, etc. Tiger chose to become and remain a public figure for all these years, seems to me you need to take the good with the bad. The minute Tiger hit the PGA Tour, he became a public figure, he is a star and easily the most recognized sports figure in the world.

On another topic, why has he been so silent? The hits just keep on coming and other than releasing statements about his infidelity written by a team of crafty lawyers, Tiger hasn’t said a word. Recently talk show host David Letterman beat the media to the punch and blew the whistle on himself admitting he has had relations with woman that work for him. Yes, it took someone to threaten him with blackmail, but Letterman didn’t hide from it and after a few days of it being all over the media, it’s pretty much over and we don’t really care anymore. Tiger should have done the same thing and talked about it right away. It would have been all over the news and tabloids for a week or so and most people probably would have moved on from it pretty quickly. Instead, he is silent and the stories of Tiger keep multiplying and we have now seen his first sponsor part ways with Eldrick, that being global consulting firm Accenture. He still has plenty of the companies he sponsors standing by him, but who is next to distance themselves from Tiger? AT&T and Gillette have announced they will limit his role in their promotions and I think more are coming.

Tiger has put himself in the public light, he is a role model for so many people in this world and has never had a problem with that before. Because of that, he has an obligation to be accountable to people who look up to him. Having said all this, it’s easy for all of us standing on the outside looking in to give advice and say what is right and wrong about how he is handling all this. I really like Tiger Woods and still do, he is fun to watch and I look forward to him returning whenever that may be.

Wrong Again BCS

The BCS got it wrong. How many college football fans wanted to see Boise State and TCU play a school from a BCS conference? The fans want to see David vs. Goliath, instead they match the 2 teams from no-name conferences together. The BCS pushed them off to the side because they don’t matter. Didn't Boise State and TCU play last year in a bowl game? Are we just going to keep making them play each other every year? I heard that players and coaches on both teams had to sit at the small table at Thanksgiving this year too. When Boise State and TCU play, no big name program looks bad, but this system sure does. It’s a joke.

Mangino "Resigns" from KU

University of Kansas Head Football Coach Mark Mangino is out of a job after a rough 2 months for him. After his team started 5-0 this season, KU then lost 7 in a row to end the season and will fail to go to a bowl game. Right along the time that the losing streak was building came the allegations of him verbally & physically abusing players. By the way, is there a college coach in the country who doesn’t verbally abuse players? These are college kids, get over it. Make no mistake about it, if KU had had a good season, we would have heard nothing about all this stuff and Mangino would still be the coach. Nevertheless he is gone after 8 years in Lawrence and he should be given credit for putting that football program on the map after being bad for years before his arrival. Things can change pretty quickly for college coaches, 2 years ago Mangino was the national coach of the year after his team won 12 games. I don’t like Kansas and I am glad Mizzou beat them this year, for that matter I am glad when anyone beats them. Having said that, unless some more solid evidence comes out on Mangino abusing players, I think he got a raw deal.
